Hradec Králové, the royal dowry town, became one of the meaningful centres of the Czech Kingdom already in the very beginning of the Middle Ages. From the 14th century it passed through the complicated building development from which the outstanding Gothic (Cathedral of the Holy Spirit), Renaissance, and Baroque sights are kept. At the end of the 18th century the town was turned into a fortress, nevertheless its strategic meaning was definitely lost after the overthrow the Austrian troops from the Prussian army in the battle on the 13th July 1886 at the near-by Chlum. The doom of the fortress enabled conceptual construction according to consistent plan at the break of 19th and 20th century, where the distinguished Czech architects like for example Jan Kotera and Josef Gocar gradually realised their purposes. Under the activity of these architects here arose unique urban complex, which was called the Salon of the Republic.
There are several opportunities for interesting trips within 20 km from the Hradec Králové. Remarkable High-Baroque chateau Karlova Koruna is in Chlumec nad Cidlinou. Another chateau Hradek u Nechanic is closed to Nechanice. Josefov, a former fortress founded in 1780, is a rare example of fortification architecture (with underground passages). Most beautiful representation of the Nativity with unique woodcarving (exhibited in Montreal EXPO 67) can be visited in Trebechovice. Another point of interest is the Kuneticka Hora, a castle on the summit of basaltic hill.
